Listen to our podcast, The Sounds of Copywriting here.

Have you stopped moving because you’re frozen in fear? Do you feel like you hit a brick wall and don’t know what to do next?

This happens to many of us, particularly when we are walking down a new path or starting on a journey that leads us into unfamiliar territory. You are moving along, often at a fairly swift pace, and you suddenly stop frozen in your tracks. It’s as if there is a wall in front of you blocking your way. Upon closer examination you see a door. You slowly reach your hand out and turn the knob, timidly, because you aren’t sure what’s on the other side of the door.

However, almost to your relief, the door is locked. You drop your hand, perhaps stand there in thought for a moment, and then turn and walk back where you came from. The door’s locked, you can’t go any further.

The locked door represents an obstacle on the road to achieving your goals. For freelance copywriters this could be frustration that you don’t have any new clients this month, or that you didn’t achieve the financial goal you had set for yourself. That wall, in fact, has brought you to an absolute stand still. After all, you can’t walk through walls can you? Obviously wherever you were headed was not the right direction. Right? Wrong!

You may be stopped, standing in front of your own closed door right now. The thing is you don’t know what’s behind that door. It could be opportunity. More money. More clients. You won’t know until you get it open.

But the door is locked you whine… (I don’t have samples, no one is hiring, I don’t have time, I don’t know where to find leads…) So what? Break that fricken’ door down and see what’s there!

I’ve seen a pattern emerge over the years I’ve been coaching – people walk up to their door (a large, looming obstacle), find out it’s locked and not easy to open (overcoming obstacles are not usually easy because it makes them uncomfortable) and they quit.

You make a decision, say to start a freelance copywriting business or to earn 30K a year more, and you start moving in the direction to make that dream a reality.

Once you make that decision the Universe will bring things into alignment to make your vision a reality. In order for you to become a person that makes their vision a reality and you have to change as well. Things around you have to change – this can be incredibly uncomfortable and incredibly scary.

It’s often right when you give up that your vision is at the tipping point of becoming reality. I see people give up right when they are about to break through their door – their fear and panic takes over and they stop looking for opportunities to move through the obstacle rather than opportunities to move through it. Panic sets in and they stop, turn around, and walk the other way instead of stepping into their true self.

If you truly desire to see your dream come true you must have a dogged determination to accomplish your goal and see the change to completion.

You have to take that pent-up fear energy and use it to propel yourself in the direction you want to go. Because the energy is new it can feel extremely uncomfortable and your instinct may be to walk away from it rather than embrace it. Embracing the fear requires a change in behavior from what you’ve done in the past. It will require you to do something you have never done before.

I recently saw an interview with Lady Gaga talking about how she steps into growth and discovers the next path for herself. Gaga said she visually sees a door in front of her. It’s closed and bolted shut. She gets whatever she needs to break the door down – in the interview she described visually grabbing an axe and a sledgehammer – and she literally tears the door down. She beats at it and goes and gets more tools and comes back and attacks it some more until she finally demolishes that door. Once she breaks it down she knows the next thing she needs to step into. There is a fanaticism to her determination to break through that door; nothing is going to stop her.

You must also have that same fanaticism to break down the closed doors in your way. The key may be recognizing you’ve actually hit a locked door rather than a brick wall.

Your closed doors may resemble:

Low self-esteem

Choosing a niche

Lack of self-confidence

Hiring a coach or mentor

Not following through

Learning a new skill

Fear

Accepting you don’t have all the answers

Lack of energy or focus

Not working on your whole self – i.e. dealing with past issues/traumas

Not being open (thinking you know it all)

Picking up the phone

Working hard and still not attracting the clients you KNOW you are capable of helping is incredibly frustrating.

Working hard and not making the money you KNOW you are capable of making is even worse!

You see other people making money and it appears almost effortless. You are marketing and seem to be doing everything you are “supposed” to be doing, but still aren’t getting strong positive results.

Are you busy all the time and don’t see how you can possibly squeeze even one more thing in?

It’s enough to make anyone frustrated and even consider quitting.

I caution you – DON’T QUIT! What you need is some help – clearly there is something you don’t know. It can be that simple.

Register for our next free teleseminar – Why You’re Not Getting the Clients you Want and What to do About it — and learn how to dramatically change your results. Next Wednesday, April 4th at 1:00pm MT (3:00pm ET) Kelly Robbins, MA, will share some exciting insights with you about building and growing a profitable client base.

On the call you’ll discover

The three main reasons entrepreneurs don’t win business

How to recognize these behaviors in yourself

Discover steps you can take to change behaviors and beliefs that are preventing success

We are also going to take a look at the Universal law of cause and effect. The “effect” is your results… Income. Clients. Struggle. Lack. What “causes” are creating struggle and lack in your life? You can’t consciously change what you don’t see. During this one-time teleconference Kelly is going to help you see what may be causing your struggles and frustrations.

Ask yourself how long have you been stuck in a pattern you don’t like. Stuck at a specific dollar amount for example. Or had the same client base for years with no change. It’s like the air is stagnant, except it’s your business or your life.

How long have you been thinking about making a change or doing something new (months or years) but haven’t taken action on it?

Now is the time to take a good look at what’s going on and why you are still in the same place. You should be able to look at your life and/or business six months ago and see change. Can you?

If any of this rings true to you I encourage you to register for this free teleseminar today.

Held next Wednesday, April 4th at 1:00pm MT (12:00pm PT).

Don’t worry if you can’t make the live call – which I encourage you to do – it will be recorded. You must register for the call to have access to the recording.

Listen to our podcast, the Sounds of Copywriting.

Social media is all the buzz in marketing for freelance copywriters today. In the last two weeks I have read at least 12 articles on pinterest (a Facebook or Twitter application) alone. Before that Google+ was a must-have for anybody who wanted to be anybody. It’s as easy to see how marketers can feel obligated to participate in social media as it is to quickly become overwhelmed with the variety of choices and maintenance required to achieve results. The enormity of creating a simple presence on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn in addition to creating and maintaining a website, blog, e-zine and all the other mediums available today is daunting.

With all the social media hoopla anyone could easily jump on the bandwagon and add one (or several) more things to their to-do list in the rush to keep up with the newest trends. Today’s advice is look before you leap. You don’t have to be everywhere to make money!

Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Squidoo, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+… the list is endless. How do you choose? How much time should a marketer actually spend on social media?

The cold, hard facts are that you don’t absolutely NEED to have a Facebook account or 10,000 followers on Twitter to make a living as a copywriter. Just because it’s free doesn’t mean it necessitates your presence.

There are some instances where it is vitally important to have a strong social media presence. For example:

If you position yourself as a social media copywriter you need to be able to walk the talk. Prospects expect to find you there.

If your clients are strong social media users, either personally or professionally, it makes sense to connect with them there.

You have targeted a niche that’s projected to expand in the social media area. For example, the high-tech industry and the field of academics are strong users of the new Google +. If these are your clients you would be wise to participate in the discussions there.

You love Facebook and Twitter (or whichever medium), you are already there and expanding into a business presence is natural and easy for you. It makes sense to continue.

Many marketers leap into social media marketing because it’s easy and inexpensive, however, it can also be a huge time suck and, if not done strategically, can lead to a lot of effort with no results. It’s important to evaluate your niche and the needs of your clients as well as their online habits and balance that with how much time you have.

I’m not saying don’t participate in social media for business purposes. What I am saying is to be smart about it and don’t just jump on the bandwagon because you can. Social media can easily become one more distraction from making sales – which is where you need to be focusing your energy.

Thinking about stepping into a new social media medium? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to see which, if any, social media outlet is right for your business:

Does the medium complement your other marketing efforts? It is one more way to connect and engage with consumers – just because you are there doesn’t mean clients or prospects are there.

If you currently gain most of your business through another avenue, such as speaking or direct selling, will social media help or hinder your sales flow? If direct selling works for you then stick with it!

How much time do you have to dedicate to updating social media? Is this something that can be outsourced?

What do you already have in place, such as a blog or e-zine, which can be leveraged with social media?

Social media is a personal, direct way to engage with prospects. You must have a personality – you can’t just post sentences from your blog. Can you do this?

I am leery of anyone who says you HAVE to do anything where marketing is concerned. The only HAVE to is selling. You can be as creative as you want when it comes to bringing the leads in, but you must know how to sell.

Social media is attractive to many solopreneurs because it is free and easy to do. My experience is it’s also an easy way to distract yourself from selling, which you HAVE to do to make money and grow your business.

Copywriters, be smart about social media usage. Remember it is just one of many tools available to get in front of your target market. It’s not for everyone and it is definitely not a requirement to building a highly profitable copywriting business.

Here is an excerpt from the book, God Works Through Faith, by Robert A. Russell (pgs 16-17). I read this book over and over again and learn new things each time. I pull it out when I am in a funky place. I pull it out when I am grouchy or feeling stressed. I pull it out when I feel stuck. I was reading it this morning and thought about how faith in ourselves is important to all of us, particularly when we take the leap to start our own business. I thought I would share this one section with you and hope it helps you where ever you are in your business today.

If you don’t believe in God, or the word itself makes you squeamish, I encourage you to read this article anyway. Find a different word to substitute. The universe, energy, flow…whatever works for you. Read and embody the message rather than get caught up in semantics. I have added some comments in green after a few of the statements to bring into focus how faith relates to building a business. I had thought about modernizing the wording and paraphrasing some of these but decided you should interpret these for yourself in a way that suits you — it’s your journey.

How to Strengthen Faith

Be expectant, confident, and optimistic.

Keep your enthusiasm strong; never allow yourself to be discouraged or depressed.

Fill your mind with interest, enthusiasm, ambition.

Keep your ambition and aspiration high; cultivate patience and perseverance.

Keep your imagination centered in what you want and keep your faith moving toward it.

Keep your consciousness expanding, growing and moving to higher levels.

Be positive in your thought, feeling, and action.

Accentuate the positive in every situation. Never allow yourself to dwell upon misery, sickness, operations, symptoms, reverses, misfortunes, or bad luck. Lack of clients, not being good enough, fear, no money

Never depreciate, criticize, minimize, or speak disparagingly of your self. Never dwell upon your mistakes. Think always of yourself as growing, expanding and becoming more efficient, resourceful and dynamic. Be aware of your self talk! Control your self talk.

Look for the good in everything and everybody. Refuse to recognize anything but the good.

Seek the best of everything and know that your mind will produce it. KNOW that your business will be successful. KNOW that you are here to help people. Seek high-paying clients. Seek clients that LOVE you and the work you do. Seek ease and grace in your growth.

Think in large terms. The more you expect, the more your faith will bring to you.

Convince your mind that what you seek is already here, that it is yours now.

Train your mind to think in terms of abundance; never allow it to dwell upon lack or limitation in any form.

Stimulate your faculties and talents by increasing your demands upon them. Get training. Read books. Take course and workshops. Push yourself to be better.

When you meet trouble of any kind, refuse to be worried or disturbed by it. Know that you are bigger than any adverse thing that happens to you and have the power to overcome it. If you don’t make a sale, another will come. A client doesn’t appreciate work you did for them, it’s ok. Everyone is not going to love your work. Some will, some won’t.

Meet every problem with the conviction that it is already solved. See it an as opportunity to prove God. See it as an opportunity to prove faith and abundance.

Face every difficulty with courage, strength, and fortitude; determined to turn it to good account.

Know that you have the power to adjust anything, change anything, correct anything, overcome anything, or subdue anything.

Act always with the Truth; and never allow yourself to compromise with evil. If the Truth is to make you free, you must rely upon it. You must pass from belief to trust. Never allow yourself to entertain failure. Know YOUR truth. YOUR dreams and wishes.

Believe the unbelievable. God goes all out for you when you go all out for God. When you go all out for you, the universe, the law of attraction, whatever you believe will bring you what you desire.

The difference between doing “good enough” and “your best” is an interesting thing to look at particularly when it comes to business. You may have to think for just a second about the difference (I know I did) and then it’s easy to move on to the next thing because you intellectually understand the concept.

However, you have to be careful here because you can understand a concept but not be practicing the action you think you are — a look at the results you are receiving will show if you are giving your best. Good enough and your best are energetically different and a quick look at your bank account and your calendar will tell you which you are doing on a daily basis.

I recently returned from Las Vegas where I participated in a four-day intensive training with millionaire business coach David Neagle. I spent the four days bringing into my awareness where I act from a place of good enough rather than doing my best. It was eye-opening for me and I hope to share some of that with you so you can grow from my experience as well.

One of the biggest awarenesses I walked away with was where I stop when I should keep going, why and what stories go on in my head that validate my stopping. There are specific areas in my business where I stop at “good enough” and I had great reason to do so – reasons that seem to me very logical in the moment.

My stories rationalize my changing tasks rather than continuing on when I face a challenge. I now clearly see why stopping where I do has affected my results.

Today the challenge for YOU is to discover where you are stopping and why….

Once you are aware of where you stop and what stories encourage stopping you can also pay attention to the physical reaction your body has when you are about to take that next step.

Now that I am home and outside of the simulated environment in Vegas I am noticing my physical reaction more than the story because again, my stories are quite legitimate. Now I quickly notice a familiar panicky feeling in my body and I know to pay attention to what I am doing and why a particular fear is coming up. I can now consciously make a choice to keep going.

Next time you are pushing yourself past your comfort zone – perhaps making sales calls or attending a networking event – notice your physical reactions (like you want to throw up or you get restless or your stomach is in a knot) – and what reasons pop in your head to do something different. I’ve had students tell me “I don’t have the right type of sample, the prospect was referred to me but they are not in my niche, I won’t know anyone, I don’t know what to say, I talked to two people and no one else looked right.” The list can go on and on.

The awareness lies in becoming aware of the stories you tell yourself that give you permission to stop taking action. I realized growing up with perfectionist parents (and I am extremely conscious that I do NOT want to repeat the prefectionist tendency) that “I did it once, that’s good enough” was a big story. But the fact is it wasn’t enough, it wasn’t my best. “You can ALWAYS do more and work more – I don’t choose to live my life that way” is another story that was sucking me in. What is the line between doing my best and being a perfectionist – which is completely unattainable? I don’t know, but I do know it was not where I thought it was.

If you want to change your results you have to change yourself. Look at your family and think about the generations of past stories and programming you were raised with. How does this affect the choices you make now?

Becoming aware of areas you are giving “good enough”, whether conscious or not, will make the difference between making the money you desire or struggling in your business.

We both know what you are capable of achieving . You may have to grow to step into it.

Freelance copywriters can learn a lot from Harry Potter. The lesson is not in wizardry or how to save the world, but in how important having a single focus and manic determination is to achieving success.

The goal

Harry’s goal was to find and kill Voldemort, which involved first finding and killing the 7 horcruxes where Voldemort had hidden parts of his soul. Harry was very clear on his goal and looked at every experience and encounter as either for or against him achieving his goal. Did this experience point him in a new direction? Was this person helpful or hurtful to achieving the goal?

How clear are you on your goal? Is it to make a specific amount of money this week? How much exactly? Is it to master copywriting skills? Is it to gain 2 new copywriting clients this month? To achieve your goal you must first be absolutely crystal clear on what it is and keep it at the forefront of your mind at all times.

Finding your path

Harry had to both find and kill each horcrux and then Voldemort — one step at a time. He didn’t know if the path he was on was the right one or not – he just kept going until he found what he was searching for. Harry took one step and then assessed what the next step should be. Only one step appeared to Harry at a time, the entire path to achieving his goal was not laid out ahead of time. He made corrections and adjustments along the way until he ultimately achieved his goal.

The same is true for you achieving your goal. You may start by choosing a niche – it may or may not be the right one for you. You won’t know until you try. To make money you will try different advertising and marketing methods. What works for me may not work for you – we all have different backgrounds, different experiences, different people we will connect with.

YOU have to get out there and try things and determine if they put you on the path to achieving your goal or not. The minute you know you are not on the right path stop and go in a different direction. You have to take the first step before the second will appear. This is a mistake many copywriters make…they wait for the entire path to be clear before they will take the first step. They want to know they will succeed before they step into the business. You can’t do that. The second step appears after you take the first step. You must learn to trust this.

Ignoring distractions

This is one of the most important step as many copywriters get derailed here. Imagine life as a Harry Potter movie. The school, Hogwarts, was on fire and explosions were happening everywhere. The walls were literally falling down in flames. Harry’s friends were yelling and running and being killed all around him. Harry paid no attention to the chaos and simply stayed focused on his goal – finding and killing the horcruxes. He Was Walking In A Different Direction Than Everyone Else, determined to follow through with his goal!

This is the same way you need to look at building a profitable and successful copywriting business. Focus on one goal – making money. Closing sales. You can NOT do what everyone else is doing or what your friends and/or family are telling you to do. Odds are the people around you are not making the money or having the success you desire. You have to be determined enough to follow through and achieve your goal and not get distracted.

A side note on this. As you do change and grow and stive to achieve your goal “life” will begin to distract you – usually in a really big way. Energy in the form of pure chaos will come up to block your growth. It may look like this – your car may break, your best friend may be getting divorced and need you, your basement could flood, you may get the flu …it goes on and on. You must deal with these events because they are really happening, but keep moving forward and don’t let them distract you. Deal with them and get right back to work.

Set a goal. Find your path. Ignore distractions. Your success literally depends on it.

You can also listen to this on our podcast, The Sounds of Copywriting, here.

Why does one aspiring copywriter quickly succeed and another struggle? Why do some painfully sweat to set their business up and attract clients while others seem to magically get business without putting much effort into it? Which are you – a struggler or an attractor?

I bet you know immediately which category you fall into, but understanding WHY you are in a specific category and then taking action to change direction is a completely different thing. It’s often hard to take an objective look at yourself and see what you are (or are not) doing that is prohibiting or stalling your success. This difficulty is often why we hire coaches, therapists or other professionals to help us create change. Outsiders can see things we can’t offer objective advice and tend to help us make strategic changes faster than we would on our own.

In my experience if you are not achieving the results you desire it could be one of two things (or both of these things); gaps in your physical processes or blocks in your internal flow.

Let’s take a look at both of these

Gaps in physical processes:
Honestly ask yourself if you are promoting your business effectively and to the best of your ability. Here are a few simple questions to answer:

The last time I attended a networking event that my target market attends was _______________

The last time I published an article or blog posting in a medium my target market reads was __________

I actively participate in social networking sites (at least one) such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter or another your target market is on such as Squidoo.

The last time I sent a direct mail piece, made cold calls, or reached out to a new group of people was ___________

The last time I spoke or did a training session was ____________

The last time I was really out of my comfort zone was when marketing myself was _________

The last time I truly pushed myself and got uncomfortable was ___________

The last time I learned a new copywriting skill, such as writing press releases or blogging was _____________

I can honestly say that I take at least one marketing action every day. __________

Blocks to internal flow

The physical actions you take to market and grow your business are critically important for growth and sustainability. Just as important are some of the nontangible aspects to running a strong business, your internal beliefs and self talk. Whether you are doing some or all of the marketing tasks listed above or not your internal flow or energy has everything to do with your results.

Ask yourself these questions to gauge your internal flow meter:

My thoughts are constantly recognizing my business accomplishments, not the failures _______________________

I feeeeel gratitude and abundance in my life and my business ____________

I am completely, 100% committed to creating a profitable freelance copywriting business. _________________

I KNOW I am successful ___________________

I believe and trust in myself. I do not tell people I am freelancing between jobs just in case a position opens up somewhere _________________________

I actively pursue personal development opportunities _________________

I know I am a gifted writer and can help people _____________________

I can list 5 reasons why I am a terrific copywriter without thinking ____________

Oftentimes success comes from how you are feeling, what you are expecting to happen, and how much “weight” you put on a particular situation. As an example, suppose you bid on a copywriting project. After you put your proposal together do you then sit by the phone waiting for it to ring, knowing that if it doesn’t you’re not going to have enough to make your rent this month and feel like the world will come to a screeching halt? If so I’d bet that you’re not going to get the project. Too much thought and emphasis is on what will happen if you don’t get the project rather than if you do.

If it’s true that you need this proposal to pay your rent this month I would submit the proposal, take a congratulatory breath for getting it done and having that opportunity, and then get your butt moving to find another proposal to submit.

If you have several projects in the hopper and know (feeeel) that even if none of them pan out the money will come from somewhere and your needs are always met, then something will come through. It always does. It all boils down to internal beliefs, thoughts and expectations.

Granted, sometimes the internal stuff can be trickier to uncover than the physical, but recognizing them and changing them if necessary is a mandatory step many must take in order to achieve results.

Take an honest look at the results you receive as well as the actions you take. If your actions aren’t congruent with the results you desire take a look inside and start really listening to yourself. Something is incongruent somewhere and you have to dig it out to create change.

Are your sales numbers down? Have you been struggling to make ends meet and see no end in sight?

Every day I speak with copywriters telling me they are struggling to make a decent living today, fighting to pay their bills… not winning the sales they used to. They assure me they are marketing their business and getting out and meeting prospects, yet their results don’t demonstrate that.

They tell me they are marketing consistently, getting in front of prospects on an ongoing basis, have systemized communications with clients and have a lead generation system in place but sales are few and far between. The fact is they are not actually bidding on enough projects to earn a decent living. And the projects they do bid on they are not winning.

This scenario tells me there is something off in their sales process. Of course I thought a new teleclass may help some folks so here we go!

This Tuesday, August 9th, at 11:00am MT I am having a free teleclass on Selling your Copywriting Services to help copywriters identify areas they may be making mistakes and to increase both the number of leads generated and the number of bids completed each week.

We are going to take a look at reasons why you may not be winning bids, how many sales proposals you should average a month to have a high enough win rate to make money, what should be included in every proposal you do and more!

On this first of its kind teleclass you will learn:

Common mistakes most copywriters make that lose sales

How to create a winning bid/proposal

The 2 types of sales calls you may experience and how you MUST handle each to win the business

If you are marketing your business and still not getting sales calls you are probably doing this one thing wrong!

When is the best time to close the sale

Register today for Kelly’s free teleclass, “How to win Sales in the Copywriting Business”, next Tuesday, August 9th at 11:00am MT AND complete our Freelance Copywriter’s Discovery Package for free (a $99 value) where you will learn your strengths and weaknesses as a copywriter and business owner as well as receive a 20 minute private review with Kelly.
