A Message from Kelly

Welcome to The Copywriting Connection! This week we are talking about Craig's list. I'm not talking about selling your old skis here, we're discussing selling business services, such as your copywriting! It works in other industries -- will it work in yours?

Trying new things and experimenting with unusual marketing opportunities are great ways to find new business and explore new ways to grow and attract business. Don't just stick with the marketing opportunities everyone else is talking about. Of course, do these proven methods and see if they work for you, however, you should also keep your eyes open for new opportunities to promote yourself. Like marketing on Craig's list -- you never know where your next big client will come from.

Happy Copywriting!

Selling your copywriting services on Craig's list

A hidden marketing secret is that entrepreneurs in other industries have been effectively selling discounted services on Craig's list for a while now. I first heard about this from a day spa owner I was working with a few months ago.

She told me she sells her beauty packages on Craig's list at a significantly discounted rate, and gets a few clients here and there. In her opinion the effectiveness of Craig's list is inconsistent at best.

For example she may package a Mother's Day special that includes hair, massage and nails – which she discounts on her website and promotions to her clients. She also puts this package on Craig's list at an even more discounted rate.

Does it work? According to her, yes! Not every time, but they do sell significantly discounted packages there. Her comments to me were "This economy has really affected my industry. People have cut back significantly on facials and other nonessential items. I have employees to pay and to me, it's better to have money come in at ½ price than to have no money come in at all."

This logic seems to makes sense. But does it work for all industries? My bet is not ALL industries.

I tried posting my copywriting services on Craig's list and didn't have the greatest results. However, that doesn't mean it won't work for you. I suggested Craig's list to one of my healthcare clients and they had a sale the first week they posted a listing, and nothing again since then.

I suggest you check out Craig's list and keep it in mind for you clients. If you're short on copywriting assignments be creative, post something, and see what comes up for you.

After all, there is no charge to post a listing on Craig's list, so you really can't lose by trying it.
