How do you know if a coach is for you?Hiring a coach or finding a mentor is one of the fastest and easiest ways to launch your business to the next level. Today's business world is much different than it was 10 or 20 years ago. With the internet and the increase in people working from home, the coaching industry has developed (which is different than a mentor) to help people learn from others and more quickly achieve their goals. In the olden days people apprenticed to masters to learn their trade. Oftentimes for seven or eight years. Today this past-time has morphed into coaching. Some copywriters are fortunate to have the opportunity to work for large companies which provide training and mentoring by superstar copywriters on staff and can learn "live". Most of us don't have that opportunity, so we look for advisors and coaches to help us achieve our goals. What's the difference between a coach and a mentor? The difference is that you hire a coach for a specific skill set, whereas a mentor helps you out of the kindness of their hearts – and a desire to giveback. A mentor or coach should be someone who's further ahead in their business than you, and is willing to help you grow. A coach may share their successes and mistakes, and help you see possibilities. Things you may not have otherwise noticed. Let's take a few minutes and look at what a coach or mentor is and discuss some things you should look for when choosing a coach, and what you can expect from the relationship. Who you should look for: Hire someone who is successful in their field. You can find these people by searching on the internet, reading through industry publications, and asking trade association executives who the leaders in the industry are. Look for someone who is well rounded in both writing and entrepreneurial skills. This does NOT need to be another copywriter, it may be someone in a totally different field that can take you where you want to go. What is coaching?: Coaching is paid for, mentoring is not. Many companies have a formal mentoring program in place for employees. Entrepreneurs and copywriters don't have this luxury. The SBA does have some great resources including SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) that offer advice and mentoring. You may have several coaches, one for business building, another for creating wealth (what I am focusing on right now), one on creating entities and tax structures, one on marketing and growth…the list can go on and on. Where you can find help: With telephone, skype and the internet, there are no boundaries on where this person lives. My mentors are all over the country and frequently travel – I never know where they are when we talk! When you should hire a coach: As soon as you can and when you feel you are ready. If you're not ready to listen to someone else's ideas because you have so many of your own, you may not be ready. When I started my copywriting business several years ago I took the business as far as I could and then didn't know what to do next to grow – that's when I hired a business coach. Looking back I realize I may have grown faster if I hadn't waited, but also had to learn some lessons to realize I needed help. The answer to this question is different for everyone. Why you should have a copywriting coach:
My coaches have all helped me think bigger than I ever thought possible. How do I hire a coach: Look for someone who is interested in mentoring or coaching. Be considerate of their time, and offer to give something in return. Even if it's something small like industry information that may be helpful or letting them know about opportunities that may benefit them. Help and mentor others yourself. When you hire a business coach you usually pay them for a specific amount of their time. Specify with them ahead of time if the monthly time includes emails or just phone conversations, if they are available during the weekend, and if the time you buy must be used within a specified time-frame. © The Copywriting Connection. How much time are you wasting doing things on your own? Word of the WeekThis week's word of the week is ineluctable [in-i-luhk-tuh-buhl]. Ineluctable means incapable of being evaded; not to be avoided or escaped; inevitable; inescapable. An example of this in a sentence would be: It was his ineluctable destiny.
