A Message from Kelly

Welcome to The Copywriting Connection! This week we are talking about how to achieve your goals. Whether monetary, physical, spiritual or professional, if there's something you want to do or change in your life, you need to do something to make it happen. You can't just think about it and change will take place -- you must act. You may be reading this and saying "I know that already". Yes, it's an easy thing to say because it's common sense. However taking action is the number one reason I see copywriting students and my coaching clients fail. This week's feature article delves into this topic and I offer some guidance on how I've overcome the inaction gremlin.

My family spent this weekend shopping and at the pool. A glimpse of summer and the change in routine is welcomed after this long Colorado winter. This weekend I also read two novels, the best was a great one by Jodi Picoult My Sister's Keeper I highly recommend it! As I was lying there reading and the kids were in the pool I realized I have two of three kids playing tennis this year (it's Bailey's first year on the tennis team) and I realized I will be at our swim and tennis club six out of seven days a week. I am going to be sick of that place by August. Thank god for laptops and the flexibility of a copywriter's lifestyle!

Finally, we have made an important change to our popular Learn The Ropes Copywriting Program. Because of the program's success and the depth of hands-on learning for each topic, and the amount of copy students have been writing, we've decided to extend the time students have to complete the course from one year to two. Many of our students hold full-time jobs and have families and are finding one year is pushing it to write the ten full copywriting projects that are part of the curriculum. Taking action is the only way to achieve goals

One of the biggest reasons I see copywriters NOT attract clients or make money is they don't take action. It sounds simple and basic – and it is – but lack of action is the number one reason why my copywriting students don't succeed.

They buy the class, they pay for coaching, they say all the right things when I talk to them, but when push comes to shove they don't DO what they need to do to attract clients.

You can think about great ideas, have big, elaborate dreams, but if you don't take action -- now -- nothing in your life will change. Your dream will never become a reality. Taking action is the only way you are going to get your copywriting business off the ground. Taking action is the only way you are going to get new clients. Taking action is the only way you are going to get noticed at your company and get promoted.

Think about what you want and how you are going to get it…all of the time.

It doesn't matter if your goals are personal or professional; setting your mind to the one main goal you want to accomplish will keep you focused on the outcome. You will constantly be on the lookout for ways to achieve that goal. Because it is always on your mind, you will be constantly brainstorming. Your mind will continually be looking for ways to take action on that goal.

You become what you think about. Focus on one item, your one goal. Make it extremely positive, NOT negative.

The next important thing, after thinking about your goal all of the time, is to take action. I try to do a minimum of one action item a day. With three kids (four if you count my husband), a house to run and a growing business, it's easy for the day-to-day duties to suck up my time. It's easy for me to let life take over and not take proactive steps towards my goal.

So I decided long ago to do at least one item on my list each day. It can be a small item to move me toward my goal. It may be searching for a new journal to run some of my marketing articles. It could be working on a new product to sell, coming up with a topic for a new seminar. Some days I do much more than one thing, other days I barely squeak the one item in. But I can assure you, if you do at least one item, if you take one action every day, you will be closer to your goal than most people you know. And because you take action towards your goal you are much more likely to reach it than those who don't.

My coaching advice for you today – do something different! The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.
