A Message from KellyWelcome to The Copywriting Connection! This week we are examining writing for the web. What works, what doesn't work, and why bringing some personal energy to your copy can make or break the connection you make with readers. Last week I attended David Neagle's ERS seminar in Las Vegas. I LOVE David Neagle! I learned more about myself and building a business, spiritually and personally, than I ever imagined. A month or so ago I asked to shake things up a bit around here. I wanted to meet people with larger businesses than mine, get WAY out of my comfort zone, and learn tons of new things. I did all of that at David's seminar. I also met Ali Brown, the ezine queen there! I believe that learning is an ongoing life skill, maybe that's why I have a copywriting school now. I deeply believe you should never stop learning. That you owe it to yourself and your life to always put yourself out there away from that comfortable place by trying new things and experiencing different people whenever you can. The Universe is huge and so are the opportunities available to you. It's your job to get out there and find what's waiting for you! We are hosting a free teleseminar on Tuesday February 12th. I'll be interviewing and picking the brains of several successful copywriters we've worked with through The Copywriting Institute. We're going to learn from them how they got started writing freelance copy, what worked and what didn't in their marketing efforts, and tons of other stuff. Sign-up for the free teleseminar now at www.thecopywritinginstitute.com/successfulcopywriter.htmlHappy Copywriting! Kelly
Writing From Your GutThis morning I was talking to a prospective client, I'll call her Julie, about writing a sales page for the internet. It was an interesting conversation because Julie had tried to write the sales page several times. It wasn't working and she realized she needed help. She then purchased a "sales letter kit" where you fill in the blanks and the program creates a sales page for you – a sales page that looks like every other sales page on the internet. She wasn't happy with that page either and we discussed her need to hire a professional to do this for her, if she wanted her business to succeed. She is putting a lot of time and energy into her new product and is determined to be successful. Passion in your copywriting Packaged copywriting programs have no life…no energy. Visitors to web sites pick up on these things, even if it’s subconsciously. What does this mean for you, the copywriter? How do you do put energy into your copy? For me that means totally immersing myself into my clients project, learning (sometimes with them) the advantages and disadvantages of their product, doing as much research and learning as I can, and then telling the reader why it's a great product straight from my gut. After all the pre-writing work and research, it's a matter of letting go of everything I've learned and talking from my gut about what Julie's doing, why it's important, and how it will affect the buyer. A program can't do that. A program has no energy. Readers subconsciously pick up on these things. They realize there is no life behind the words and they click away. Can just anyone get to that point where they take an idea and write straight from their gut? Just spew it out there and let what comes out come out? Some people will tell you that when you do this spirit or the universe is talking through you. For most people it takes training and experience before they get to this place of effortless writing. Most of my best pieces are when I just let everything loose; don't try too hard and just let the words flow. There is usually a lot of research and thinking that happens before I get to this point, but after I've done all the pre-writing work, it's a matter of stepping away from the project, maybe working on something else for a little while, and then just jumping in and letting "the flow" take over. I talk to people from my gut, instinct takes over, and the words just come. This didn't happen overnight. This process works for me because I've done it many times and I've studied and experienced what works and what doesn't. When you do follow this process and learn to "write from your gut", your copy flows better, your copy sells better, and ultimately your clients are happier. © The Copywriting Connection. Coadjutor means an assistant, more specifically meaning an assistant to a bishop, especially one designated to succeed the bishop. An example of coadjutor in a sentence is: Tom Smith, as the coadjutor bishop, was expected to become a bishop within the year.
