Copywriting Course Teaches Copywriting Basics

That’s where the Learn the Ropes Copywriting course from The Copywriting Institute comes in handy!
We strongly believe in learning by doing – not by reading about it. Each course has a short, informational guide that teaches you the basics about the medium you’re writing about, and then you write it. Many of the courses are complemented with a recorded interview with a professional copywriter discussing best practices they’ve used, or have guided audio content by professional copywriter Kelly Robbins. At The Copywriting Institute we believe you learn by doing – not by reading about it.
Each course includes a minimum of one case study (based on an actual client) for you to write copy for. If you feel you need more practice (or we feel you need more practice) we’ll send you another case study to work on.

All the feedback on your coursework comes back with written guidance on what you did right, what worked, and what didn’t. We’ll ask you to keep writing until you’ve got the techniques down pat and feel confident you have the skills to start working with actual clients. When you are done you’ll have the skills and confidence (and writing samples if necessary) to write copy for a paying client.
Also, anything you write you can use as a sample in your portfolio!
Here’s what you’ll learn to write in the Learn the Ropes Copywriting Course:
- Web site copy and SEO. Learn to help a small business with the beginning stages of creating a new site to writing the actual copy. This course starts with you creating an outline of what pages you suggest they have on the website. Once they’ve “approved” your pages you write the home page at a minimum. You are then asked to go through and optimize the site for search engines (SEO).
- Speech writing and podcasts. Learn about the enormous speech writing industry, how to break into it, and how to write an impactful speech. Recorded interviews with author Joan Detz and professional speechwriter Colin Moorhouse.
- Brochure copy. Brochure writing is without question a copywriting basic. Brochure writing skills are a must for any copywriter, no matter what their specialty. Course includes interview with professional copywriter Steve Slaunwhite.
- Blogging for profits. Learn why companies blog, what makes some blogs better than others, and blogging best practices. When you are finished with this course you post your blog on a live blog. Freelance copywriters are paid $250-$500 per blog post – shouldn’t blogging be a part of your portfolio?
- Free reports – The number one small business marketing tool. White papers are a close second. Learn why companies use free reports, what should and should not be included, and best practices for moving readers through the sales cycle.
- Corporate newsletter – Learn to write short, impactful articles that move the reader to take action. This case study starts with a large insurance company that sends communications to its members. Your job is to take a TON of information and compact it into a short, educational article that moves the reader to take a desired action. (Real world example)
- Advertorials – The hottest trend in copywriting today, advertorials are paid advertisements that appear to be stories written by a staff journalist. This high-paying field is another untapped market for copywriters. Selling without appearing to sell is a craft in and of itself.
- Press Releases – Another highly paid writing niche, writing press releases can be a wonderful addition to any copywriter’s portfolio. Odds are your clients are pitching press releases already – who’s doing it for them if it’s not you?
- Email campaigns and promotions – Writing email and developing email campaigns are two of the most sought after trades in internet marketing today. Emails are much different than direct sales letters or even newsletters and web pages. Learn the do’s and don’ts for email promotions, including the number one thing that every email promotion needs to have to be successful.
- Ezines – Electronic newsletters are without question the way to do business today. Less expensive than print and easily affordable, writing copy for corporate ezines is an easy way to have consistent income and allow clients to keep in touch with their client base. Learn some common features in an ezine as well as write copy for one.
I have enjoyed the course so far. Kelly is extremely knowledgeable and she explains the material well. I was on a tight budget, but as a newbie I knew I needed someone to critique my work (which to me is the biggest help and makes the course worth the money). If you are already a working copywriter, Kelly will make you even better. She will ask you to revise your work until it is right, which I like, even though it can be frustrating until the light bulb comes on. She will stretch you and challenge you to be your best. And she is extremely encouraging, which makes the critiques easier to swallow.
There isn't anything I don't like about the course, but it was a bit disconcerting at first when she critiqued my work. She is not harsh at all, but she is up-front and honest, which is what any student needs. I've gotten used to it and look forward to her comments, because I know that in the long run it will make a big difference in my writing - and in what I am paid for it."
